The Milgram Experiment Showed 65% of People Will Obey Authority to the Point of Hurting Others
In 1961, psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a famous experiment at Yale University where ordinary people were instructed by an authority figure to deliver what they believed were electric shocks to a stranger. Despite hearing screams of apparent pain, 65% of participants continued administering shocks up to the maximum level labeled 'XXX: 450 volts.' The experiment, designed to understand how ordinary Germans followed Nazi orders, revealed that obedience to authority is one of the most powerful forces in human behavior.
