The term 'dinosaur' was invented by British palaeontologist Richard Owen in 1842, combining the Greek words 'deinos' (terrible/fearfully great) and 'sauros' (lizard or reptile). Owen coined the term when classifying three large fossil reptiles: Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus. He recognised they shared a distinct upright posture unlike any living reptile, uniting them as a new taxonomic group.

Taoist alchemists, searching for an elixir of immortality, inadvertently created gunpowder while experimenting with sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal. Initially used for fireworks, its military applications were soon realized, revolutionizing warfare globally.

The rise of the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries led to a clear separation of astronomy, focused on empirical observation, from astrology, which became increasingly viewed as a pseudoscience.

In medieval Europe, medical practices frequently incorporated astrological principles, with each zodiac sign governing specific body parts or humors. Physicians would often consult planetary positions before recommending treatments or performing surgeries.
