While long thought to be mostly mute, giraffes do communicate using a range of subtle sounds including snorts, hisses, moans, and even infrasonic hums. These low-frequency hums may be used for communication over long distances.
They produce infrasound calls, too low for human hearing, which travel through the earth and are detected by other elephants through their feet and bones. This allows them to communicate over vast distances, far beyond vocal range, to warn of predators or locate mates.
