Before colonialization, Burundi was an independent kingdom with a complex social and political structure centered around the Mwami (King). This long history of indigenous governance shaped much of the country's cultural identity and traditions.

After gaining full independence from the United Kingdom in 1984, Brunei joined the Commonwealth of Nations. This membership reflects historical ties and a shared commitment to common values, even with differing political systems.

Beneath the Capuchin Church, this crypt is the principal burial place for members of the Habsburg dynasty, who ruled for over 600 years. It contains elaborate sarcophagi, including that of Empress Maria Theresia.

He technically became King upon his father Charles X's abdication in 1830 but immediately abdicated himself in favor of his nephew, the Duke of Bordeaux. This makes his reign the shortest in history.
