Cocos Islands Hosted a Significant World War I Naval Battle
In November 1914, the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney engaged and defeated the German raider SMS Emden during the Battle of Cocos. This marked a decisive early victory for the Royal Australian Navy and ended the Emden's successful raiding career.
