Red Supergiant

Antares is a massive red supergiant, about 700 times the size of our Sun, and shines with a luminosity over 10,000 times greater. Its name, meaning 'rival of Mars,' reflects its reddish hue which can sometimes be confused with the planet Mars in the night sky.

Scorpius contains Antares, a red supergiant star that is about 700 times the diameter of our Sun. Antares is the 15th brightest star visible and marks the 'heart' of the celestial scorpion, easily spotted by stargazers.
