Jean-Bédel Bokassa, who seized power in 1966, declared himself Emperor of the Central African Empire in 1976. His lavish coronation ceremony, costing an estimated $20 million (equivalent to a third of the country's annual budget), was inspired by Napoleon Bonaparte and involved a custom-made diamond crown.
