Cats Cannot Taste Sweetness

All felids — domestic cats and wild species alike — lack a functional copy of the Tas1r2 gene, one of two genes required for detecting sweet flavors. This is believed to be an evolutionary adaptation: as obligate carnivores, detecting sweetness provided no survival advantage.
