Fiji Became Independent From Britain in 1970

Fire walking is an old tradition on Beqa, a small island south of Viti Levu.

The earthy drink is made from the root of a pepper plant and is shared in social and ceremonial gatherings.

It was Fiji's first ever Olympic medal, won by beating Great Britain in the final.

About 110 of the roughly 330 islands are inhabited.
