Humans Are Terrible at Detecting Lies — Even Experts
Research consistently shows that people can only detect lies at a rate of about 54% — barely better than random chance. Even trained law enforcement officers, judges, and customs agents perform no better than untrained individuals. There is no reliable physiological 'tell' for lying, which is why polygraph tests are inadmissible as evidence in most courts. People tend to rely on eye contact and fidgeting as cues, but these behaviors are unrelated to deception.
