Lightning Is 5 Times Hotter Than the Sun's Surface

The surface of the Sun burns at around 5,500°C. A bolt of lightning, however, superheats the surrounding air to roughly 30,000°C — about 5 times hotter. Despite this extreme temperature, the lightning bolt itself is only 2–3 cm wide.
