The Sahara Desert Was Green 9,000 Years Ago

During the African Humid Period (approximately 11,000–5,000 years ago), the Sahara was covered with grasslands, lakes, and rivers. Rock art found in regions that are now barren desert depicts hippos, crocodiles, and cattle. The transition to desert was caused by shifts in Earth's orbital cycle.
