While painful and often requiring medical attention, the vast majority of scorpion stings are not deadly to healthy adults, with only about 25 of the 2,500+ known species possessing venom potent enough to be lethal. Children and the elderly are most vulnerable to severe reactions.
Unlike many other arthropods, scorpions are viviparous, meaning they give birth to fully developed live young after a gestation period. The mother scorpion carries her offspring on her back until they complete their first molt, protecting them from predators.
Fossil records indicate that scorpions are among the oldest known terrestrial arthropods, having evolved from marine ancestors. Early scorpions possessed gills and adapted to land environments during the Silurian period, predating dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years.
Their exoskeletons contain fluorescent chemicals, notably beta-carboline, that absorb UV light and re-emit it as visible blue-green light. Scientists believe this unique trait might help scorpions find mates, detect prey, or even navigate their nocturnal environments.
