Unlike most glaciers that are retreating, Perito Moreno in Los Glaciares National Park maintains a state of equilibrium, even growing at its terminus. This dynamic behavior leads to spectacular rupture events where ice walls collapse into the lake.

This phenomenon, known as the Mpemba effect, is still not fully understood but has been observed for centuries. Hypotheses include supercooling, evaporation, convection currents, and dissolved gases affecting the freezing process.
