Flamingos

Unlike the volcanic origins of most BVI islands, Anegada is a flat coral atoll, providing unique salt ponds and marshlands perfect for these vibrant birds. The BVI government has implemented conservation efforts to protect their significant breeding grounds, offering a truly spectacular wildlife viewing experience.

Inagua National Park is home to over 50,000 flamingos, a remarkable conservation success story after their numbers dwindled in the early 20th century. These vibrant birds are the national bird of The Bahamas.

Their iconic pink plumage comes entirely from their diet of brine shrimp and algae, which contain carotenoid pigments. Without these pigments, captive flamingos will remain white or gradually fade if not fed properly, revealing their true color.

The iconic pink plastic lawn ornament, first created in 1957, has proliferated globally to such an extent that its numbers far outstrip the population of actual flamingos, which are unfortunately declining in the wild due to habitat loss.
