Unlike many oceanic islands, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are true coral atolls, meaning they are rings of coral reefs built atop submerged ancient volcanoes. The visible landmass is entirely biogenic, created by living organisms over millennia.

Despite its subtropical location, Bermuda's reefs thrive thanks to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. These isolated reefs are incredibly diverse and act as a natural barrier, protecting the island from ocean storms.

Despite immense pressure, the water in the deepest parts of the ocean, like the Mariana Trench, remains incredibly cold, typically between 1-4°C (34-39°F). This is because sunlight cannot penetrate these depths, and cold, dense surface waters eventually sink to fill these abyssal plains, creating a perpetually frigid environment.

Scientists discovered a vast reservoir of water, three times the volume of all surface oceans, locked within a blue mineral called ringwoodite in the Earth's mantle. This "deep earth ocean" influences volcanic activity and plate tectonics.

The Mariana Trench, nearly 11,000 meters deep, experiences pressures over 1,000 times that at sea level. This crushing force is roughly equal to stacking 50 jumbo jets on top of a person, yet life still thrives there, adapted to extreme conditions.

Instead of bones, sharks have skeletons made entirely of cartilage, a flexible and durable connective tissue. This makes them lighter and more agile in the water, contributing to their impressive predatory abilities.
