Before Antivenom, a Black Mamba Bite Was Almost Certainly Fatal
Prior to the development of black mamba antivenom, a bite was considered a death sentence across sub-Saharan Africa. Local communities called it 'the kiss of death.' Even today, antivenom must be administered quickly — ideally within 20 minutes — and in sufficient quantities. Rural communities far from hospitals still face a grim prognosis if bitten, and black mamba bites claim hundreds of lives annually across Africa.
